My friends and family don't think I'm making the right decision. What should i do?

I'm 17 years old, in college, gay, my dream is to be in the police force and i also like long walks on the beach. All my friends,family and even my boyfriend don't think i'd be any good as a police officer, their reason is "I've not got the right personality for it" hmm :(
